All Elta Ada Organic Farm, Gökçeada (Imbros, Dardanelles) Products

Since 2004, We have produced only certified organic products on our Elta Ada farm located in Gökçeada (Imbros or Imros), Turkey’s the largest island.

Our own cropland covers 150 ha. of area. We grow our fodder crops such as clover, maize, vetch, barley and wheat, which meet all coarse requirements of our cows, goats and sheep.

We are the first producer in Turkey that produce certified organic yogurt, milk and various kinds of cheese. The dairy processing our milk is located on Elta Ada farm. Our products are sold in our own shops, and ecological public markets, and they are also sold in Migros, Macrocenter as well.

We also produce organic extra virgin olive oil. 16,000 units of olive trees are growing in 100 ha. of area on our farm. Our harvest starts from October every year, and olives are pressed in our own factory which is also located on the farm. We have been working with the belief of that healthy food, sustainable farming and clean soul; with an objective of making Gökçeada familiarized as an “Organic Farming Island” both in Turkey and in the world.

SUSTAINABILITY IN ORGANIC AGRICULTURE

Organic Agriculture is an ecosystem management based on the knowledge and planning. The planning in organic enterprises comprises the agricultural lands, the non-agricultural lands, the enterprise’s boundaries and its environment.

In organic agriculture, the plant and animal production should be planned together and a closed system should be developed in enterprise as far as possible.

“In organic agriculture, generally a part of the production in agricultural areas is formed by graminae and the other part is formed by legumes and the nitrogen fixation is provided. On the other hand the animal manures and herbal wastes are regained to the soil in order to increase soil fertility. Thereby, the agriculture richness sustainability is provided for plant production.

Gökçeada has a closed ecosystem within itself which is far from environmental effects. For this reason, it is more suitable for organic agricultural production and animal breeding in comparison to other regions.

Gökçeada has typical Mediterranean climate and it is one of the richest island in terms of freshwater bodies. With this feature, it has the self-sufficient potential for both agricultural and utility water.

Elta-Ada farm cultivates 90% of the feed need by itself. In addition to the 400 decares of alfalfa in cultivated area, it cultivates 700 decares of vetch and 700 decares of corn in every year. Also, triticale, barley and oats are also grown for concentrate feed. With rotation of crop systems, the soil fertility is protected and the productivity is increased by using animal manure obtained from the organic production seasonally. Besides, it is benefited from 1200 decares of olive groves as a pastureland throughout the year, for pasturage of calves, heifers and sheep and goats. 2/3 of the planted corn is used for silage production and the rest is used for grain production in every year. Vetch and corn are grown successively and two products are produced in the same year.

“When examined in terms of environmental and socio-economic sustainability, it is important to develop models, suitable with local conditions, based on knowledge.” Elta-Ada gains favour such as raw material and finished production which are created in its own scope, cultivation, package, logistics and sales chain, family management, domestic production and branding, protection of rural and urban environment, reaching the consumers with short chains, income growth in rural areas and labour creation.

ORGANIC LIVESTOCK FARMING AND ANIMAL WELFARE

The Animal Welfare is at the forefront in Organic Livestock Farming. The generality of diseases are caused by not providing animal welfare. For this reason, it is necessary to have the environments with large navigation areas, as well as hygienic and suitable for animal comfort indoor areas.

The quality and quantity of water and feeds and the manner of their delivery are very important in organic animal feeding. Water quality, quantity, manner of delivery: Animals’ drinking water should be at the same quality as people’s drinking water; in particular, the content of the nitrate should be considered. It should be allowed animals to drink water as much as they can and when they want. Generally, air, water and feed quality significantly influence the animal health.

The adaptation of animals to local conditions, power of endurance, disease resistance and promotion of biodiversity should be considered for the selection of species in organic animal production.

The organic livestock should be got open areas for grazing when the weather conditions are suitable and these areas should be prepared for certain time periods.

An average of 6 decares of cultivable land per animal is needed for organic cattle-raising. Besides, there is almost no organic roughage and concentrate feed trade in Turkey. In such a case it is obliged to produce almost all of the feed within the enterprise.

Elta-Ada Farm has 3,000 decares of land of which 1200 decares has olive trees and this area is also used as pasture. In field agriculture; predominantly alfalfa, vetch, silage, corn, barley, wheat and oat forage plants are grown organically, the rough and concentrated feed needs of the animals are met. We also breed sheep and goat in our farm.

In organic animal feeding, new-born calves are given mother’s colostrum for 3 days in order to strengthen their immune system and are fed with 5 kg of milk daily during 90 days. For this purpose, we have good quality organic dry herbs and organic concentrated feed from the 2nd week in order that the young animals to get used to the feed. Milk feeding period is at least 3 months for calves and 2 months for lambs and kids.

The male calves come to slaughter at 20-22 months. They continuously pasture in suitable weather conditions and fed by dry grass, silage and grain feed. There is no problem about fats because the natural development of animals is not intervened.

Our milking system in livestock farming is fully automated (2×12 pieces); our cows are fully milked in hygienic conditions without hand touch. 24 animals are taken in the milking house together. The milkers clean the nipples of the animals first of all and milk two three drops of clotted milk at the udder and throw out, and clean them with warm water and a wet cloth. The milking heads are attached to the udders and the milking begins. Milking time is 5-8 minutes. Milked milk is transferred to the cooling tank without waiting with a closed system. 37-38 degrees of milk taken from the udder is reduced to 4 degrees in the cooling tank. In this way, the bacteria that will be produced in the hot milk are prevented and the quality of the milk is maintained. After milking, the system automatically washes and rinses itself three times. Washing takes 2.5 hours.

Our enterprise has the “Health Certificate for the Enterprises free from Diseases” given by T.R. Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. It is free of Bovine Tuberculosis and Bovine Brucellosis diseases. This certificate has been issued by the Ministry of Agriculture. Blood and skin tests are performed by the Ministry officials every year from the point of Tuberculosis and Brucella diseases.

The other standard approved by our Ministry in our farm is “EU Approved Dairy Farm” certificate. Raw milk samples are regularly analysed every month in the Provincial Directorate Laboratory and somatic cell counts are checked and milk production in EU standards is registered.
